Climate Change Project


Requirements of Students:

1) Keep a blog/vlog journal of trip: day by day - so parents and individuals in Skagway can see in real time what they are experiencing.
2) Keep and edit a film documentary of trip
3) Interview and record politicians and individuals in the places we visit (these interviews will be uploaded into itunes and could be used in film?)
4) Create an extended project around a theme
5) Hold a "Climate Change" conference in Skagway with guest speakers and a film festival
6) Read 2-3 books related to Climate Change and the Pacific

The Great Transition: Shifting from Fossil Fuels to Solar and Wind Energy - by Lester R. Brown and Emily Adams


7) Fundraise the money for travel


Flight Costs Estimate:

Juneau to Fiji to Kiribati to Majuro (Marshall Islands) to Honolulu to Juneau = $2709
Juneau to Majuro = $2100
Majuro - Kiribati = $350

Housing Estimates: $6300
Food estimate per student = $600

Someplace with a Mountain

Here is a documentary about a group of islands - Puluwat - in Micronesia (800 miles away from Yap) where traditional Micronesian lifestyle is still lived by the entire community.  You can't get here by plane.  These islands are now sinking and the people will have to move.

If they meet all requirements it is my hope that the school will give the 1 elective credit to appear on their transcript: PROJECT BASED LEARNING: CLIMATE CHANGE IN SMALL ISLAND STATES (or something like this).
